Is this film suitable? The current British Board of Film Classification system for movies is shown below. The BBFC, when making its classification decisions, also publishes consumer advice based on violence, sex, swearing, and narcotics. We are obliged to publish this information in our listings (for example the weekly flyer), and we feel that in most cases this information is enough guidance.
Parental Responsibility We'd just like to remind you that sometimes, a 12A movie can be unsuitable for most children. All we can do, however, is remind you that it is the responsibility of the parent or carer and not the cinema. If you have any doubts over the suitability of any movie, we strongly recommend the expanded advice published by the BBFC on its sister site: Parents BBFC.
Universal
Suitable for all: unaccompanied children of any age may watch. It is impossible to predict what might upset any particular child, but a ‘U’ film should be suitable for audiences aged four years and older. ‘U’ films should be set within a positive moral framework and should offer reassuring counterbalances to any violence, threat or horror.
Parental Guidance
General viewing, but some scenes may be unsuitable for young children: unaccompanied children of any age may watch. A ‘PG’ film should not disturb a child aged around eight or older. However, parents are advised to consider whether the content may upset younger or more sensitive children.
Twelve or Accompanied
Suitable for 12 years and older. No-one younger than 12 may see a ‘12A’ film in a cinema unless accompanied by an adult over 18.
Responsibility for allowing under-12s to view lies with the accompanying or supervising adult.
Fifteen and Older
Suitable only for 15 years and older. No-one younger than 15 may see a ‘15’ film in a cinema. You may be asked to provide proof of age when buying a ticket to see a ‘15’-rated movie.
Eighteen and Older
Suitable only for 18 years and older. No-one younger than 18 may see an ‘18’ film in a cinema. You may be asked to provide proof of age when buying a ticket to see an ‘18’-rated movie.
